A veterinary assistant is a trained professional responsible for assisting the veterinarian in providing healthcare for animals. Routine tasks of a veterinary technician usually involve conducting lab tests, administering of medications and assisting in dental and surgical procedures. An individual can start to become a veterinary technician through attendance of an AVMA or CVMA accredited school. The education and training a veterinary technician receives is important for him to be able to provide proper animal health care. Once he completes his education, a veterinary technician will need to pass a state-required exam in order to receive certification. A veterinary technician can be referred to as certified, registered or licensed depending on the regulations sanctioned by his resident state. There are other fields a veterinary technician can choose to specialize in such as neurology, dentistry and cardiology. In addition to animal clinics, a veterinary technician can also find employment in government offices, research facilities and veterinary schools.
